What Will You Learn?

  • This is a Training Programme taking you through all the stages of using AutoCAD Civil3D accurately to carryout the geometric design of roadways, applying the relevant codes and standards, and understanding the nuances of design from START to FINISH.
  • NOTE: This programme will be based on a real life project; and so, you'll be learning from a project that has been designed and completed by the creator.

Topics of Course

Step 1-4: Preliminary Tasks and Set-Up
Learn how to remotely explore project sites using Google Earth Pro, organize survey data in Excel, and import it into Civil3D. Gain a solid foundation in road design standards and optimize your Civil3D workspace for efficient design.

Step 5-7: Survey Data and Surface Creation
Learn to automatically configure your survey database in Civil3D for faster, more accurate data interpretation and geometric precision. You’ll also create an Existing Ground (EG) surface and apply label and display styles to analyze and visualize terrain effectively.

Step 8-10: Road Alignment and Layout Design
Master the design of horizontal and vertical alignments in Civil3D, balancing safety, terrain, and aesthetics for optimal road geometry. This tutorial guides you through creating a detailed road layout that meets client requirements and adapts to existing site conditions.

Step 11-13: Corridor Modelling and Surface Generation
Learn to create typical cross-sections and build corridors by combining alignments, profiles, and assemblies for a 3D road design in Civil3D. This tutorial also covers generating a corridor surface to visualize the final design and extract accurate elevation data.

Step 14-16: Cross-Section and Material Calculation
Learn to generate cross-sections for detailed road profiles and set up quantity take-off criteria in Civil3D. You'll also calculate material quantities, a key step for cost estimation, project scheduling, and efficient procurement.

Step 17: Introduction to Drainage Features
Insert drainage features such as ditches, culverts, and stormwater management systems. Learn how to incorporate these elements into your road design to ensure effective water flow and prevent flooding or erosion.

Step 18-20. Design Data and Documentation
Learn how to extract and export design data from Civil3D, including Plan, Profile, and Section views. You’ll also compile these into well-organized design sheets ready for printing and submission.
